01 / Technology
Hy-Series and extended aeration
What is a Hy-Series wastewater treatment plant?
Hy-Series is Hy-Treat’s compact plug-and-play wastewater treatment platform for domestic-type wastewater. It uses extended-aeration activated sludge, clarification, and return sludge to biologically treat wastewater rather than simply store it.
What does extended aeration mean?
Extended aeration supplies oxygen and mixing over a longer biological treatment period. This supports stable aerobic microorganisms that consume biodegradable organic material before the water reaches clarification.
What is return sludge?
Biological solids settle during clarification. A controlled portion is returned to the aerated treatment zone so active microorganisms remain available for continued treatment.
Does every project use exactly the same physical design?
No. Hy-Series is the standard technology platform, but Hy-Treat can adjust physical layout, capacity, installation arrangement, and downstream treatment when the site or wastewater requires it.
02 / System differences
Septic, anaerobic, and aerobic systems
How is Hy-Series different from a septic tank?
A septic tank mainly stores wastewater and settles solids, with limited anaerobic breakdown. Hy-Series actively supplies oxygen, carries out aerobic biological treatment, clarifies the treated water, and returns activated sludge.
Is an anaerobic system a complete wastewater treatment plant?
Not automatically. Anaerobic treatment can reduce part of the organic load and settle solids, but an anaerobic-only tank should not be assumed to provide the same effluent quality as a correctly designed and operated aerobic plant.
Why do some systems operate without electricity?
Passive settlement and anaerobic processes may operate without powered aeration. Low energy use can be useful, but it is not evidence that the system provides treatment equivalent to extended-aeration activated sludge.
03 / Sizing
Selecting the right plant
What information is needed for preliminary sizing?
Hy-Treat needs the facility type, expected occupancy, operating schedule, estimated wastewater flow, location, available space, discharge or reuse objective, and any future expansion plans.
Is the number of people enough to select a plant?
It is a useful starting point for residential wastewater, but final selection must also consider daily flow, peak use, organic load, wastewater characteristics, occupancy pattern, and operating conditions.
Can I use the online calculator as a final selection?
No. It provides preliminary hydraulic guidance using provisional allowances and model capacities. Hy-Treat must review the project before confirming a plant.
Can capacity be expanded later?
In many cases a modular arrangement or additional treatment capacity can be considered. The existing plant, site layout, hydraulic levels, and expected future load must first be reviewed.
04 / Installation
Excavation and site works
Can a Hy-Series plant be installed underground?
The plant is normally placed in a prepared excavation with safe access, ventilation, correct finished levels, and protection against rainwater ingress. Final requirements depend on the site and installation design.
How much space is required?
Space depends on the selected model, excavation allowance, pipe connections, access for placement, and long-term service clearance. Hy-Treat should review the proposed location before construction is finalized.
Can the plant be installed where groundwater is high?
High groundwater changes structural and installation requirements and may require engineered anchoring, base works, drainage, or another arrangement. It must be identified before installation.
How is the plant placed in the excavation?
Depending on plant size and site access, placement may be manual or use lifting equipment. The prepared base, level, backfill material, plant filling, and connections must follow the approved installation method.
05 / Operation
Electricity, noise, and odor
Does Hy-Series require electricity?
Yes. The biological process depends on powered aeration and automatic operation. Continuous reliable electrical supply is important for stable treatment.
Does the plant smell?
A correctly sized, ventilated, powered, commissioned, and maintained aerobic plant is designed for odor-controlled operation. Strong odor can indicate overloading, loss of aeration, unsuitable wastewater, ventilation problems, or a maintenance issue.
Is the plant noisy?
Aeration equipment produces some sound, but correct equipment selection and installation can keep it controlled. Actual sound depends on model, location, enclosure, ventilation, and surrounding conditions.
What happens during a power outage?
Short interruptions may be manageable, but extended loss of aeration can reduce oxygen and treatment stability. Contact Hy-Treat after a prolonged outage or if odor and effluent quality change.
What if the property is empty for a period?
The effect depends on the duration, plant condition, and return of loading. Extended periods with little or no inflow should be discussed with Hy-Treat so operation can be adjusted appropriately.
06 / Service
Maintenance, sludge, and spare parts
How often does the plant need maintenance?
Inspection and service frequency depends on loading, operating conditions, model, and observed sludge accumulation. Hy-Treat can define a suitable schedule after commissioning and operational review.
Does sludge still need to be removed?
Yes. Biological treatment produces excess sludge over time. It must be assessed and removed responsibly when required; biological treatment does not eliminate all residual solids.
Are spare parts available if component brands change?
Hy-Treat designs support around functions and serviceability rather than one public equipment brand. Suitable replacement parts can be provided and the complete system can be inspected and repaired.
Can Hy-Treat repair a plant installed by another supplier?
Often, yes. The first step is an inspection of the process, tanks, aeration, transfer functions, controls, sludge condition, loading, and observed symptoms.
07 / Treated water
Discharge and reuse
Can treated wastewater be reused for irrigation?
Potentially, but biological treatment alone does not automatically make water suitable for every reuse. The intended irrigation use, required quality, filtration, disinfection, monitoring, and applicable requirements must be assessed.
Is treated wastewater safe to drink?
No. Hy-Series treated effluent must never be presented as drinking water. Potable reuse would require a separate, highly controlled treatment and regulatory framework.
Is disinfection included?
Disinfection and filtration can be added where the discharge or reuse objective requires them. The correct treatment train depends on the required final quality.
What affects final effluent quality?
Influent strength, hydraulic and organic loading, oxygen supply, biological health, clarification, maintenance, temperature, prohibited discharges, commissioning time, and optional polishing all affect performance.
08 / Site conditions
Protection and troubleshooting
Why must rainwater be kept out?
Rainwater can hydraulically overload the plant, disturb treatment, and change flow patterns. Covers, finished levels, drainage, and pipework should prevent stormwater from entering the wastewater system.
Why is ventilation important?
Ventilation supports safe equipment operation and helps manage air movement and odors. Access covers and enclosures must follow the approved installation arrangement.
What can cause dirty discharge, foam, or persistent odor?
Possible causes include overloading, loss of aeration, unsuitable chemicals, poor sludge condition, hydraulic surges, equipment faults, commissioning issues, or insufficient maintenance. A site inspection is the safest next step.
